La Storia dell'Osteria e del Ghetto Ebraico

OSTERIA DEL GHETTO IS LOCATED IN A HISTORIC BUILDING DATING FROM THE 16TH CENTURY IN THE CITY CENTRE OF FERRARA ONLY FIVE MINUTES' WALK FROM THE ANCIENT CATHEDRAL AND NOT FAR FROM THE ESTENSE CASTLE, WHICH ARE TWO OF
THE MAIN SIGHTS IN THE CITY.
RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT IS THE FIRST THREE-STORIES-BUILDING OF FERRARA WHICH DATES FROM ABOUT THE SAME CENTURY.
wE ARE IN THE HEART OF THE ANCIENT JEWISH GHETTO WHICH, BETWEEN THE 15TH AND 16TH CENTURIES, WAS ONE OF THE MOST PEOPLED IN THE WHOLE EUROPE.

THE OSTERIA ITSELF IS AT N.26 VIA DELLA VITTORIA WHICH IS A MEDIEVAL COBBLESTONE STREET AND IT TAKES UP TWO FLOORS:
ON THE GROUND IS A NICE AND COSY HALL ROOM AND AN OUTDOOR SEATING AREA WHILE ON THE FIRST FLOOR ARE TWO VERY INTIMATE EATING ROOMS.

THE KITCHEN IS ALSO LOCATED ON THE FIRST FLOOR AND SPECIALISES IN TYPICAL FERRARESE CUISINE AS WELL AS FISH DISHES AND SOME RECIPES INSPIRED BY THE JEWISH CUISINE.
THE CHEF STEFANO BIANCHINI HAS A VERY ARTISTIC FLAIR: HE LOVES DECORATING EACH SINGLE DISH THAT COMES OUT OF HIS KITCHEN.
ONE OF HIS MOST POPULAR CREATIONS IS GRILLED OCTOPUS WITH CHIPS OF PURPLE POTATOES (SO CALLED 'VITELOTTE') ON A BED OF CHICKPEA SAUCE.
THE HOST LAURA ON THE OTHER HAND IS VERY FOND OF A PARTICULAR DISH SHE HERSELF INTRODUCED TO THE OSTERIA: PANFRIED ANCHOVIES WHICH HER CUSTOMERS LOVE BOTH AS A STARTER AND A SECOND COURSE!

THE JEWISH GHETTO

The Jewish community of Ferrara has played an important role in the history of the town of the Estense family.
The first significant Jewish presence dates back to the 13th century.
The most important migration occurred in 1492, when Duke Ercole I d'Este welcomed the Spanish fugitives, expelled by the king Fernando of Aragon.

Along via Vittoria, formerly Via Gattamarcia, are still visible the wrought-iron balconies which remind us of the presence of the Sephardic refugees, a Portuguese Jewish community.

At the end of 1500 about 2,000 Jews lived in Ferrara, a considerable number if you think that the population of Ferrara was a little more than 30,000 people.

The Jewish presence in Ferrara helped to increase the business, financial, and craft: important were loans made occasionally to help the Dukes of Este when the state was in economic difficulties.

In 1598 the Estense family, for lack of direct male heirs, had to leave Ferrara to settle in Modena and many Jews followed them.

With the arrival of the papal domination in Ferrara, the conditions of the Jewish community worsened.
In 1627 the ghetto was established in Ferrara and the Jewish community was remained segregated there until 1796 when, with the arrival of Napoleon's troops, it was reopened.

It was only in 1859, one year before the Kingdom of Italy was established, that the Jewish community finally acquired Italian citizenship.
